Cyber-Physical Radiative EMI Attacks on Sensorless Motor Drives: Destabilization, Adaptive Torque Manipulation, and Physics-Based Detection

Research Abstract

Electromagnetic interference (EMI) is an emerging cyber–physical threat to sensorless motor drives that rely on accurate current feedback. This paper presents an experimental study of radiative EMI attacks on a three-phase GaN inverter operating under sensorless field-oriented control. Specifically, non-contact EMI intrusion is investigated to examine how it may disrupt current sensing and electrical angle estimation, resulting in torque degradation and eventual loss of synchronism. Beyond instability, an adaptive EMI attack is presented in which disturbance amplitude is adjusted using only an external rotor speed measurement and a simple mechanical torque estimator to steer the drive toward a malicious torque operating point without access to internal controller variables, demonstrating that EMI can function as a controllable analog attack channel rather than a random disturbance. Additionally, a physics-based detection technique is proposed that provides early, low-latency attack detection under the tested conditions by tracking torque consistency across the mechanical and electrical domains. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of both the adaptive attack and the proposed detector.

32 Scientists from Assiut University Named Among the World’s Top 2% Most Influential Scientists in Stanford University’s 2026 Ranking

Assiut University has achieved a new scientific milestone, with 32 of its scholars included in the list of the world’s top 2% most influential scientists, according to the 2026 ranking by Stanford University. This recognition reflects the research excellence of the university’s scholars and the significant impact of their scientific contributions within the international academic community.

The list includes 18 scholars from Assiut University based on their "career-long" scientific impact, and 32 scholars based on their scientific impact over a single year—totaling 50 entries for the university’s researchers across both categories.

Dr. Ahmed Abdel-Mawla, President of Assiut University, congratulated the scholars for their inclusion in this prestigious list. He emphasized that this achievement underscores the exceptional research capabilities of the university’s faculty and the global reach and influence of their scholarly work.

The University President further noted that Assiut University places great importance on scientific research and high-quality international publishing. The institution strives to provide a stimulating environment for researchers, thereby enhancing the university’s scientific competitiveness and solidifying its standing among Egyptian, Arab, and international universities. He added that the growing presence of the university’s scholars in international rankings serves as a catalyst for the continued development of the research ecosystem and the further improvement of research output quality. Dr. Gamal Badr, Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research at Assiut University, expressed his pride in this achievement. He explained that the inclusion of such a large number of Assiut University scholars in the Stanford list reflects the high quality and diversity of the university’s research output, the high citation rates of its internationally published scientific work, and the ability of its researchers to conduct studies that make a significant impact within their respective fields.

The Vice President for Postgraduate Studies and Research noted that this milestone is the result of ongoing efforts to support researchers, encourage publication in prestigious international scientific journals, foster research collaboration, and motivate faculty members and researchers to produce high-quality, impactful scientific work. He emphasized that the university remains committed to refining its research policies to further enhance its standing in international rankings.

The Stanford ranking utilizes various indicators to measure the scientific impact of researchers—including citation counts, the H-index, co-authorship metrics, and a composite scientific impact index—while categorizing researchers across a wide range of scientific fields and disciplines.

This achievement underscores Assiut University’s growing presence in international rankings and indices. It also reflects the continuous development within the university’s scientific research ecosystem, as well as its dedicated efforts to improve the quality of research and increase its global impact.
